The Lost Sock

What I spent time on last week:

Planning and running a new route
Waiting for the fire department with my daughter outside her condo (false alarm)
Reading about how to become a better coach
Watching Northern Exposure, three episodes of season five
Facilitating a leadership workshop
Pulling weeds and planting flowers

We do what is important, whether we recognize it in the moment or not. It is always our choice.

My choice? 15 minutes to find the sock. It was tucked into a pillow case. It’s a favorite pair—so it was time well spent.

Too Big to Try

Question #123: What project have you given up on because it's too ambitious?

Big goals are easy to abandon. Who can blame you for moving on from something so enormous it scares you? Except there is still part of you that thinks, “that was a pretty good idea.”

So then, what’s the smallest piece of that project you can do right now? Then, after that…what’s next? And next? Before you know it, you may have created something big, rewarding, and impactful (like starting your own business).

Mom Always Said, “Do Your Best”

The motto of every mom and dad before the big game, test, or performance: “Do your best.” The unintended consequences of that advice? A life spent seeking ambiguous perfectionism (i.e. the “best”).

What’s the alternative? Aim for a target that is both clear and ambitious. As Adam Grant states in his latest book, Hidden Potential, “…an objective that’s precise and challenging focuses your attention on the most important actions and tells you when enough is enough.”

Want to be a better friend? Initiate the plans; plans that defer to their likes, not yours.
