Success begins by asking the right questions. So why not a newsletter that asks a powerful question: “…and what else?”

Hope these insights pierce through the clutter and create a moment to reflect on your purpose.

First Thoughts

The sign next to the coffee machine in the office lobby read:

“Notice! We no longer have coffee available for customers. - The Management.”

“Management”—That generic entity that forces people to do things they don’t want. The mysterious group that is to blame if you don’t like it. “They” made the decision; “they” are responsible for your complaints. “I,” on the other hand, had nothing to do with it.

A few similar “not-my-decision” refrains: “It’s company policy,” “It’s out of my hands,” “My boss made that decision,” “They are the reason for your disappointment, not me!”

Sometimes deferring responsibility feels safe and easy. But it seems more than ever we need less “they” and more “we.”

Question #63: What both scares and excites you?

If you don’t sometimes ask, “What did I get myself into?” you’re not living a life of purpose. Being a little nervous means you care.

Worth Doing

Creating a new habit can be daunting. But there are some tricks to get started. Try this hack:

Temptation Bundling: Link your aspirational habit to an existing habit that you already enjoy. (e.g. You like listening to audiobooks >> listen to them only when working out.)

Duck or rabbit? More like duck and rabbit.

Perceptions—especially initial, unchecked ones—can limited our ability to make good decisions. Our willingness to probe beyond our initial perceptions can create a broader understanding of situations and people. Read about it here.
