People Is Not a Person

People: A group with common attributes or interests, such as sports fans, car enthusiasts, hunters, runners, suburbanites, et al.

Person: An individual with unique life experiences, emotions, motivations, and intent.

We may think we know the person because of their “people” affiliation. Yet that perspective is incomplete at best.

Adapting

Adjusting your communication style to fit the situation and person is not “giving in to them.” Adapting your approach shows that you:

• Understand the other person

• Care about a mutually beneficial outcome

• Value the relationship more than being right (or comfortable)

Next time you face an opposing opinion or style, ask yourself, “What is our shared intent?” rather than “How can I win this interaction?”

Basing your identify on your performance is not sustainable; basing it on your values is.
