Words Matter

One of my mentors once told me, “You’re either persuading, being persuaded, or dead.” Blunt, but insightful. So if you’re choosing the former (and avoiding the latter), here are some tips:

Asking someone to be "a helper" rather than just "help" is more persuasive. (Particularly effective with kids.)
Adding "Because..." to an ask increases persuasion.
Saying "what could I do" rather than “what should I do” generates more creative thinking.
Using present tense increases persuasion. The latest “…And What Else?” newsletter is insightful vs. was insightful.
Describing yourself (and others) as what you are vs. what you do is viewed more favorably. I am an innovator vs. I am innovative.
